Snow has finally arrived in Minnesota!  And with that, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here. From light displays to Christmas shopping, you are probably counting down the days until you gather with loved ones and celebrate the holidays. One of the hidden keys to a great holiday celebration starts with a well functioning furnace. When your furnace is functioning well, you won’t be fretting the basics like heat and can focus on your family and which Christmas cookie tastes the best.

So how do you know if you’re furnace is ready for Christmas?

Most of us assume our furnace will keep working well into the holidays.  But with a few quick checks, you can sleep easier knowing you have one less thing to worry about this holiday season.

Check for Gas Leaks

Gas leaks can be a danger to you and your family and could interrupt all those festive parties you have planned. One small step you can take is to check for loose connections. If you discover a loose connection or smell gas, be sure to call a professional for inspection and repair.

Replace Your Filter

If you haven’t already replaced your furnace filter for the coming winter months, be sure to put in a new filter now. An old and dirty filter can block air circulation in your home and decrease your furnace’s efficiency. Replacing the filter will also reduce allergens and other particles that may be an irritant to your family and guests.

Inspect Air Vents

Blocked vents can decrease heating efficiency – which will leave your home cooler and your heating bills higher. Ensure each vent is free to circulate air and open any closed vents. A great way to do this is to move from room to room and move anything that might be blocking the vents like rugs, furniture and long curtains.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Celebrating the holidays means you and your loved ones will be home and on a different schedule than normal. Check that your thermostat is working and set to a comfortable setting. Consider resetting your thermostat turn on/turn off times to a temporary holiday schedule.

Schedule Your Yearly Tune Up

If you haven’t done so already, we recommend getting a furnace tune up once a year. Your furnace tune up will give you peace of mind that your furnace is running efficiently all winter long. And, because we’re in the season of giving, Twin City Heating and Air is offering a year end special.
