1. The Age of Your Air Conditioner

Typically, air conditioners last between 10-15 years. If your AC is more than 10 years old, it may be time to start thinking and planning for a replacement.  Check out our other signs to see if your air conditioner is showing the signs of it’s age.

2. Higher Utility Bills

As an air conditioner ages, it starts to work less efficiently. The less efficient your AC is running, the more it will cost you to run it. Check your SEER rating. The current standard is a SEER rating of 13 or higher, which indicates higher efficiency.  If you have a SEER rating below 13, your unit may  causing increased utility costs.

3. Frequent Repairs

While your air conditioner should require a yearly tune up and an occasional repair, it should not require frequent visits from your HVAC technician. You’ll want to weigh the cost of these repairs with the possible savings of a new high efficiency AC. Our rule of thumb is if your frequent repairs are adding up to half the cost of a new unit, then it may time to replace.

4. Odd Sounds

If you are hearing a lot of noise or odd sounds from your air conditioner, it may be time to replace. Declining units can make a grinding or squealing sounds. Hearing these sounds on start up or while running your unit is a sign that it may be time for a replacement.

5. An Uncomfortable Home

At the end of the day, what’s is important is the comfort level of your home. Air conditioners that need to be replaced will struggle to keep your home cool on warmer summer days. You may also notice higher humidity in your home, moisture around your windows, and even more dust. Any of these symptoms can be signs of a larger problem with your air conditioner.
