The first day of summer is this month bringing warm weather to Minneapolis. This means that your air conditioner is in season. Like with any major home appliance, it’s essential to make sure that it is ready to take on the heat. There are many tips and tricks that we would love to share to get your air conditioner ready for the summer.

Start with safety

Before working with your air conditioning unit, it is important to turn off the circuit breaker. Working with your appliances can be dangerous if you don’t take the safety precautions. Most air conditioners have 240 volts running through the circuits, which is dangerous without the right training and equipment.

Change the air filter

Changing your air filter is an easy start to your air conditioning maintenance. If you need to find an air filter, use the current one as a guide or check the manual for your air conditioner. Your air filter is important to keep up to date because it catches the dust, dirt, and allergens in the air. We recommend changing your air filter every one to two months to keep your home’s air healthy.

Clean around the outside unit

Your outside unit should have a space cleared around the coils and condenser to make sure the air will flow properly. Any debris such as branches, leaves, vines, or garbage, should be cleared out of the way so that there are no issues later with efficiency or integrity. Be sure to check the condenser and coolant lines for debris and scratches. If there are any major dents or cracks, call your HVAC professional to get it fixed right away.

Update your thermostat

If you have an older thermostat, you may have a chance to save money on your energy bills by updating your thermostat. Newer thermostats are programmable to automatically adjust to different temperatures at different times of the day per your setting. Contact us to learn more about thermostats that will help your home become more efficient.

Inspect each part of the unit

A quick inspection of both units of your air conditioner can save you a lot of trouble down the road. If you aren’t sure what to look for, call us to learn more about our inspections or check out our inspection page on our website.
