The last thing you want in the middle of summer is your air conditioner going out. There are a multitude of reasons this may be the case and we have some troubleshooting tips for you to try on your A/C before you need to call in the professionals at Twin City Heating and Air.
Thermostat
First and foremost check your thermostat. You may not have set the changes for summer properly or even at all. Having the right settings so that your air conditioner is on when you need it the most is very important. Another common problem that is often overlooked is that your thermostats batteries are dead. This problem is a simple fix, swap them out with some new ones. You may even consider getting a programmable smart thermostat that you can control from your phone.
Switches
You may also be having a switch problem. There are two switches that you’ll ned to check. The indoor and outdoor disconnect switches. The indoor one may have been switched off on accident, usually if its placed in your garage or attic. Before doing other fixes, make sure that this switch is on. The outdoor switch may have been switched off for any number of reasons. Both switches should be near their respective units indoors and outdoors.
Electrical
There are some electrical issues that may be preventing your air conditioner from turning on. Check your breaker box because one of your breakers may have tripped, reset it if necessary and try your A/C again. Electric breaker can trip when they are overloaded. Consider shutting off other equipment that may be overloading it. If it keeps happening call and schedule a visit with our Master Electrician. It could be that you’ve blown a fuse or a transformer, in which case you’ll have to replace it before your A/C will work. It’s best to call in our electrician unless you’ve had the proper training.
Clean
Cleanliness is also an important factor in keeping your A/C running at optimal performance. You may have a dirty filter, over time it gets clogged with grime and dirt/dust. The mess can restrict airflow to your HVAC system. Without proper air flow the system can freeze up, literally, ice can form on the coils. Speaking of coils, they also need to be cleaned regularly, dirty A/C coils can make it hard for the system to remov heat from your house effectively.
These reasons are why it’s so important to get tune-ups and inspections regularly. Twin City Heating and Air can catch these problems and issues ahead of time. You will truly feel the difference this summer.
