Learn more about your HVAC system

Find out what kind of HVAC system you have, even if you don’t know what all the terms mean. The more information you can provide to professionals, the easier time they will have of helping you. You may need to know if your system is central air, does it have heat pumps, is it a mini split, does it have a boiler, etc. Next, you’ll need to know what kind of fuel it uses. Common fuel options are electricity, oil, propane. and natural gas. Find out the age of your devices. Many can last for a very long time but start to have some issues at 10-15 years old. Knowing what the rating of your HVAC system’s efficiency and active warranties are also be quite beneficial.

Preventative maintenance

A big reason that many HVAC systems start to experience problems and have lower efficiency is a lack of preventative maintenance. A quick and relatively cheap step you can take is to change your air filter. Roughly every 3-6 months, you need to swap it out for a clean one. Make sure the area around the outdoor parts of you A/C are clean and clear of debris. Clutter can build out and possible prevent good airflow or even damage the device. It is also a good idea to make sure the area around it isn’t crowded by things like shrubs, gardening tools, or toys for the same reasons. Make sure you are getting both your furnace and A/C checked out once a year by professionals. It will help you to find small problems before they grow into big issues.
